The first Sprinter Diesel Multiple Units entered service in December 1993. They were designed to be used as single carriages or in multiple units of up to eight carriages. Construction was at Broadmeadow in New South Wales, with internal fitting out of most cars being completed at North Bendigo Workshops in Victoria. The Sprinters have a maximum speed of 130 km/h. In V/Line service they operate between Melbourne and Bacchus Marsh, Geelong, Waurn Ponds, Kyneton, Traralgon and Seymour. Metro (Metro Trains Melbourne) operates Sprinters between Frankston and Stony Point. Number 7019 was scrapped following a collision in 1996.
