The S Class was introduced in 1998 as part of an effort to modernise the narrow gauge locomotive fleet in Western Australia. They were ordered around the same time as the Q Class locomotives were ordered for standard gauge service, and are also fitted with radial steering bogies. The S Class units are mainly used for mineral traffic between Kwinana, Collie and Bunbury, south of Perth.
