Seven former New South Wales 48 Class locomotives were rebuilt from 1998 to 2001 by FreightCorp at Chullora in Sydney to become the PL Class. Initial service was working PortLink intermodal freight shuttle trains between Port Botany and other locations in the Sydney suburban area. They were later used in other freight and shunting duties. PL1 is now used for shunting at Port Augusta in South Australia.
