Like the earlier IMU 100 Series trains, the IMU (Interurban Multiple Unit) 120 trains are similar to the SMU trains, but are designed for longer distances. They operate as three-car sets that can be combined to form six-carriage trains. The IMU 120 Series were introduced with the opening of the railway line to Brisbane airport in 2002, and are interoperable with the IMU 100 Series trains. Differences between the IMU 120 Series and the IMU 100 Series are minor, including different door operating systems and different cooling systems.
