The IMU (Interurban Multiple Unit) 100 trains are similar to the SMU trains operating in Queensland, but are designed for longer-distances, with facilities including toilets and luggage racks. They operate as three-car sets that can be combined to form six-carriage trains. The IMU 100 Series were introduced with the opening of the Gold Coast line to Helensvale in 1996.
