The twelve members of the GL Class were constructed using the frames, bogies and other parts of former New South Wales 442 Class units. They entered service in 2003 and 2004. The GL Class units are used in freight service, mostly in New South Wales but also interstate. GL102 and GL106 are lased to Linx Rail Services. GL112 is in service at Weipa in Far North Queensland.
