These trams were initially referred to as the C Class, but became known as the C1 Class when the C2 Class trams were introduced. When they commenced service in 2001, the C Class trams were the first fully imported trams to begin operations in Melbourne since the 1920s. They were also the first low-floor type trams in Melbourne. All members of the class are allocated to Kew depot, providing service on Route 109 to Port Melbourne and Route 48 to Docklands.
