The AC Class units were originally obtained for working Koolyanobbing–Esperance iron ore freight. They have also been used in grain and other freight operations in Western Australia. The letter ‘v’ in the model designation indicates that the locomotive is equipped with variable power option, enabling fuel savings when operated in multiple with other similar units.
