The A2 Class trams are similar to the A1 trams, but they have some upgraded features, such as improved braking. They were built with pantographs, a new fixture for Melbourne trams, instead of trolley poles, following their use on the B1 prototype trams. The introduction of the last A2 trams led to the withdrawal of the final W2 Class trams from service. They are allocated to Camberwell, Kew and Southbank depots.
