The A series electric train sets were introduced when the Perth suburban railway system was electrified in 1992. Each set consists of two carriages, which can be coupled to operate as four-car trains. Both AEA and AEB carriages have motors, although only AEA cars have pantographs. Their maximum speed is 110 km/h.
