The 81 Class was introduced by the State Rail Authority of New South Wales to provide more powerful units for freight service than locomotives in service at the time. They incorporated Super Series wheelslip control technology, which enabled them to haul increased loads. 8147 was withdrawn following fire damage, but the remainder of the class remain in service with Pacific National.
