South Australian Railways introduced the 600 Class in 1965, using the same DL541 model as the New South Wales 45 Class. Their initial service was construction work on conversion of the line between Port Pirie and Broken Hill to standard gauge. They later saw standard gauge service on various duties, mostly in South Australia but also in New South Wales. Four were later rebuilt as the BU Class.
