The 49 Class had their initial service in western New South Wales, where their introduction led to the dieselisation of the line between Parkes and Broken Hill. They later operated in the Sydney metropolitan area. Three were renumbered as the KL Class, and a further two as the MM Class for service with the Manildra Group. 4904 was renumbered as KL80 but was later renumbered back to 4904. Five are in operation with Southern Shorthaul Railroad.
