The first members of the 442 Class entered service with the Department of Railways, New South Wales, in 1971. Units 44235–40 were completed by Commonwealth Engineering after AE Goodwin ceased business. They were mostly used in main line freight service throughout New South Wales. Several members were later renumbered in private service. Twelve 442 Class units were rebuilt as the GL Class from 2002 to 2004.
