The 2800 Class were obtained for hauling freight and passenger trains, and most of their service has been in freight traffic on the North Coast and Mount Isa lines in Queensland. Three were renumbered to become the 3200 Class and transferred to standard gauge, while one was reclassified as the PA Class and transferred to Western Australia. Some units are stored at Redbank in Brisbane, but most remain in service.
