Originally used for hauling coal trains, the 2470 Class now work mostly in general freight traffic. All members of the class were converted to driver only operation during the 1990s, indicated by the ‘D’ suffix in the locomotive designation. Later some members of the class were fitted with dual control for sugar cane traffic, indicated by the ‘H’ suffix. Six members of the class were rebuilt as the 2300 Class.
