Originally used in coal haulage, the 2170 Class were replaced on these duties by electrification of some Queensland coal lines. All members of the class have been modified for driver only operation. The remaining units are now mostly used for general freight duties in Queensland. Seventeen of the class were exported for operation in South Africa, although some returned to Australia in 2019 for service with Watco Australia.
